Kelpie

Today for spooky season I wanted to write about the Kelpie/Each-Uisge, a Scottish and Irish water spirit associated with death.

Kelpies are shapeshifters, often taking the form of a black horse with backwards hooves or a human, commonly a brunette woman. In some folktales, their feet stay hooves when as people. Kelpies are known to drag people underneath the water and drowning them.

Kelpies are often compared to Nixie and Melusine as well as Satan. Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, is sometimes believed to be a Kelpie.

If a Kelpie is shot with silver, it will weaken and become its true form of an amorphous blob similar in appearance to a jellyfish. If one interacts with a Kelpie, the only way to free oneself may be to cut off one’s own fingers.
