Melusine

Today I wanted to write about Melusine, a French-German fresh water spirit.

Many royal houses in Europe have claimed to be descendants of Melusine, including the house of Luxembourg, house of Anjou, house of Plantagenet, and house of Lusignan. Melusine is one of the three daughters of Pressyne and Elynas who were raised in Avalon. Once she was fifteen she left Avalon to live in the forest in Poitou. In the forest she met her husband Raymond of Poitou who who found her very beautiful and proposed to her immediately. She married him under the condition that he never enters her bathing chambers, years into their marriage when their children are adults he breaks his oath and finds her bathing in her half-snake form. He then murders their children before Melusine turns into a dragon and flew away.

She’s been compared to and synchronized with many other spirits, including Succubus, Lamia, Nimue, Nixie, Artemis, and Banshee.
