Tom Thumb

Today I wanted to write about Tom Thumb, an Arthurian figure who was sometimes evoked in English and Scottish folk magic.

Tom Thumb is the son of old Thomas of the Mountain, who longed for nothing more than a son, “even if he was the size of a thumb.” So his wife consulted Merlin who tells her she will give birth in three months. When she does give birth her son is so small his clothes are made from oak leaves and cobwebs. Tom’s small size made him one of the best jousters in Arthur’s court.

Tom Thumb is mentioned as a spirit in the Discoverie of Witchcraft alongside dwarves, elves, fairies, and giants.
