Bakunawa

Today for Dragon month and the full moon I wanted to write about Bakunawa, a Filipino serpent responsible for storms, earthquakes, and eclipses.

There were once seven moons, one for each night of the week, until Bakunawa devoured six of them. When he tried to eat the last moon, he was attacked by the humans, causing him to spit out the last moon.

Bakunawa is often synchronized with the Hindu Nāga and Rahu.

During a lunar eclipse pots would be banged together in attempts to stop Bakunawa from devouring the moon. His image is often placed on swords to give the user his strength.
