Xolotl

As today is indigenous peoples day I wanted to write about Xolotl, a Mesoamerican psychopomp and god of fire, lightning, twins, monsters, misfortune, sickness, deformities, and venus.

Xolotl is the twin brother of Quetzalcoatl; they’re the sons of Chīmalmā and, sometimes, Mixcoatl. Xolotl is the protector of Quetzalcoatl as he travels through Mictlān during the night.

Nanahuatzin is most likely as aspect of Xolotl.

Xolotl would often appear as a dog, specifically as a Xoloitzcuintle, or as an axolotl when guiding souls to Mictlān. Sometimes people would be buried with their Xoloitzcuintle to act as guides to the underworld. Xolotl was often venerated alongside his brother Quetzalcoatl being the cycle of death and rebirth.

Mesoamerican polytheisms are partially closed practices with different people having different views about it. From what I’ve read many indigenous and latinx people view the deities from Mesoamerican polytheisms as open, to a degree as it was a cultural thing for Mesoamerican civilizations to exchange deities and this being a continuation of that practice; as long as non-indigenous people are willing to listen to indigenous and latinx voices and recognise that there are closed parts to Mesoamerican religions.
