Akka

Continuing with spooky season I wanted to write about Akka, an Estonian, Finnish, and Sámi spirit or group of spirits/goddesses responsible for both birth and death.

Maderakka is one of the five Akkas, she creates bodies and is the goddess of women and children, she has three daughters: Sarakka, goddess of love and fertility, Juksakka, protector of children, and Uksakka, goddess of pregnancy. Maderakka also has a sister Jabme-akka, the fifth Akka and goddess of the underworld who sooths the dead. Sometimes all five Akkas are faces of one singular goddess who is the wife of Ukko.

In some traditions the dead would be buried with hunting tools so that when they arrived to Jabme-akka’s realm they would still be able to hunt as the underworld mirrors our own.
